GRADING THE TESTS
The following information will help students determine what a numerical grade marked on the test sheet represents in respect to traditional letter grades (A, B, C, etc.) and how it is determined.
Grading Scale:
A+ (97 or above) A (93-96) A- (90-92) B+ (87-89) B (83-86) B- (80-82) C+ (77-79) C (73-76) C- (70-72) D+ (67-69) D (63-66) D- (60-62) F (Below 60)
Grading Procedure:
A. For those who take the test in the regular class period when it is given:
The machine that corrects scantrons calculates the grade to two decimal points.
I simply drop the fraction to arrive at what I call the base grade.
I then add two points for anyone who has taken the exam at the proper time.
(For example, if you receive an 80.67 on a test taken at the designated time, your base grade becomes an 80, to which two points are added bringing it to 82.)
B. For those who miss the original exam period for whatever reason and then take a make-up:
Anyone who takes the makeup within two weeks will not be penalized. (In other words, whatever the reason for having missed the exam in class, a student will get the base grade, without the two points.)
Most exams will be given on a Friday. As a result, the makeup should be taken by the end of office hours on the second Friday thereafter in order to escape a penalty.
If an office hour within that period has to be cancelled, then the non-penalized period for making up the test will be extended into the next office hour.
After that grace period of two week, there will be a 10 point penalty attached to the makeup.
Two failures to make up the test within the two week grace period may lead to expulsion from the course.
