A Message by Pastor Katsumasa Hirota,

1st Sunday, at Oita Evangelical Christ Church, on June 7th, 1998

Sermon: "Our Titanic failure, and God's Mercy". II Peter 3:1-15.

This is the second "open air" worship service that we have had together in Chapel Noah's church history. It's such a blessing to be able to give our God praise and worship in this beautiful nature. Leaving buildings to worship in natural surroundings, we cannot but help praising God for His creations. You know, even in my dictionary, when looking up Earth's beginnings, it is described that there was nothing but chaos. And, when we read the Bible's book of Genesis, we all know that there was nothing but the Spirit of God. In God's process of creating the "world", we know that water was used. Every creature was made by God. Upon seeing nature, we automatically think that it was made by someone. Think of the heavenly stars, and planets in the universe. A certain book tells us that the sun is maybe as much as 130, 000, 000 times the size of our planet. Every single creature was created by God, which is a blessing from God. But also, some day in the future, in God's timing, all these things will be destroyed. Remember in the time of Noah, because of people's wickedness, God destroyed the world with water? Some historians and others have testified that Noah's Ark did exist in a certain place on the earth. The earth experienced a terrible time. And, after this, God promised that He would never destroy the Earth by water again. However, there is a different way, the World will be destroyed again! See II Peter 3:3. The movie "Titanic", recently, has been such a success in the World. And, lots of people have been greatly moved by it. As you know, this movie closely followed the real event which occurred about 86 years ago. In those days, a ship as huge as the Titanic bore the people's beliefs that it could never sink. It was perfect. -- However, it was not. There's no "perfect" thing that can be made with human hands! The Titanic was crushed by some iceberg. It was not perfect at all! There is today a Japanese musician, whose grandfather had been on the Titanic. His grandfather had been saved. That is why he is here in this time of history! Had his grandfather died, his father would not have been born, and he would not be as he is. It was God's mercy and grace. To save his family, his grandfather was not allowed to die. Read Hebrews 12:7. Certainly, the end of the World will come again, though we do not know the time at all! If we knew, we would surely be in a panic. But, everything is in God's hands! Today, we would like to thank God for His creatures and the blessed time we have been given in which we can lead our lives. According to His mercy, He has held back this destruction so that as many people as possible can be saved - for He wants everyone to find their salvation in Him.
