I. Call To Order - 6 p.m.

II. Roll Call - Burris, Coleman, Brown, Mayberry, Mallory, and Gooden were present.

III. Recognition of Guests/Comments From Public And Employees - Connie Williams asked for the opportunity to address the Board in closed session. The request was granted.

VIII. Informational

  1. Superintendent Bill Rogers informed the BOE that the computer software was not working and the financial report had to be put in manually.
  2. Presentation by Brian Geru of Sylvan Learning - Bragged on past successes and indicated that 60-65 students from grades 3-8 would participate this coming year.
  3. Presentation by Brad Ellerbroek of BLI Lighting Specialists - Much detail was presented on replacing the lighting at Emerson, Bennett, and the old Junior High Gym - new fixtures and new lamps. (CJSHS meets code and therefore will not be affected.) Most of the work will be paid through grant money. Local contractor will supply materials, and union workers from this area will be used to perform the work. Work will begin at 3 p.m. and will be completed within a two-week period.
  4. AYP Status Report - Bennett Elementary & Cairo Jr/Sr High School - As was already reported, Bennett Elementary met AYP for the second year in a row. ISAT scores were great. However, the PSAE scores for the high school were not good.
    a. Restructuring - Superintendent Rogers is going to write a letter to the State Board indicating that Cairo has made great improvement over the past two years, hoping that they will take that into consideration when deciding on any mandated restructuring. The goal is to make improvement from year to year.
  5. Emerson and Bennett will implement "full inclusion" for special education this year...least restrictive environment. The Junior and Senior High School will have modified inclusion.

    t. Employ Librarian (Time.6) - CJSHS - Motion made, seconded, and passed to hire Paula McKinnis for 3 days per week.
    u. Motion made, seconded, and passed to hire Bernard Brown as Junior High Assistant Girls Basketball Coach.
    v. Motion made, seconded, and passed to hire Tim Brown as Boys Baseball Coach.
    w. Superintendent Rogers indicated that the District was still advertising for a full-time Math and Science Teacher, High School Head Boys Basketball Coach, Girls Softball Coach, and CJSHS Boys/Girls Track Coach.
  2. Approve Health/Life Safety Ten Year Surveys - To be conducted by Mevert Professional Associates for Emerson & Bennett Schools and Cairo Community Education Center - Not to exceed proposed bid - Motion made, seconded, and passed.
  3. Approve District School Improvement Plan - Motion made, seconded, and passed.
  4. Approve One Year Extension of Levill Pest Control Service's Contract - Motion made, seconded, and passed.
  5. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to change the regular monthly meeting of the Cairo BOE from the current 2nd Thursday of the month to the 3rd Thursday.
  6. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to appoint Mary Coleman as the BOE's representative to the JAMP Governing Board, with Brenda Gooden serving as alternate.
  7. Superintendent Rogers indicated that he would be out of the District on September 6th and 7th to attend the State Superintendent's Conference.
  8. Superintendent Rogers reminded the BOE members of the annual convention in Chicago on November 16-18.
  9. Superintendent Rogers also reminded the BOE members of the District Breakfast to be held at CJSHS on August 15th.
  10. Tommy Ellis asked to make a comment...about the failure of the District to offer Chemistry and Trigonometry at CJSHS this coming year...that his son needed those classes in preparation for his college major. Mr. Ellis indicated that other parents were upset also. Connie Williams echoed Mr. Ellis' concerns.
