VIII. Informational

  1. Ten (10) year Health/Life Safety - Superintendent Bill Rogers informed the Board that an inspection for Bennett and Emerson is scheduled for September 18, 2007. The CCEC was actually supposed to have been inspected on February 12, 2007. (There was some discussion as to whether the CCEC had to be inspected. Since there are some students housed in the building, the answer is most likely yes. Further communications will take place on the matter.) Any deficiencies noted will have to be corrected over a 3-year period. (The CJSHS building is good until October 19, 2009.)
  2. Cairo Community Education Center - Superintendent Rogers indicated that he was aware that discussions had taken place about the future of the CCEC...and that the Board needed to decide what direction they were going to go. He informed them that the building would lose another tenant...that the ROE was pulling out after this year. Apparently, the ROE has been talking to the First National Bank in Cairo about renting space on the second floor of their building. Also, there is a meeting tomorrow with representatives of SCC for the purpose of measuring the space that they are renting in the CCEC.
  3. Superintendent Rogers presented the student handbooks - the combined Elementary Handbook for Emerson and Bennett, along with the one for CJSHS. BOE member Vernon Stubblefield initiated a dialog about concerns that he had heard from parents and the Parent Staff Organization about certain portions of the past handbooks, especially the CJSHS Handbook. Following some discussion among the BOE members and the audience, the consensus seemed to be to table a vote on the handbooks until the August meeting. Further discussion about the need to have the handbooks available for the beginning of school and the length of time needed for all stakeholders to provide input, finalize the changes, and get the handbooks approved and printed changed the opinion of the BOE. The final consensus was to proceed with approval of the handbooks as presented with the understanding that changes would be forthcoming...to be approved at a later date as as "addendum". A motion was made, seconded, and passed to do just that.
