CAIRO: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

A reminder from the Southeast Missourian...

Be sure to visit the link below on the "Cairo Project"...some interesting stuff!

However, the teacher in me can only give the students an "A-". The reason for the deduct lies in the caption to the first picture on the Web site...got the river wrong! It's the "mighty" Ohio...

Incidentally, that's ironic on this date...May 4th. Those of you old enough to remember the student riots on college campuses during the Vietnam era will recall that today is the anniversary of Kent State, immortalized by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young..."Four Dead in Ohio". (This correspondent had the "pleasure" of being called to active duty the next day...to patrol the campus of SIU Carbondale. Students beware...NOT. While biding our time in the Carbondale armory, the radio kept repeating...to calm the public...that the Illinois National Guard would NOT have loaded rifles. So much for the "fear factor". Oh, SOME fear remained...on our side. Despite the lack of any radio announcements, we knew that the students WOULD have "loaded" bricks and bottles!)

One other footnote...same picture. Notice the "cutesy" lettering on the picture..."NO CLIMBING ON LEVee WALL". Wonder whose idea that was? Don't have a clue, but I do know why! That was the only way to correct the spelling - from "LEVY" to "LEVee" - without spending money to buy a new sign.

At least in this electronic age, the Cairo Project webmaster can change rivers with a few strokes of the keys!
