CAIRO CITY COUNCIL - PART I

According to this article from the Cairo Citizen, "Part II" is/was tonight...

Cairo City Council meets

The council chambers were noticeably quiet during the Cairo City Council meeting Tuesday, where little business was accomplished in regular session.

Mayor's remarks

Cairo Mayor Paul F. Farris reported that thanks to an anonymous donor, the Cairo Police Department was able to purchase two new patrol cars and a copy machine.

He also reported that if equipment couldn't be moved from one of the city's patrol cars, the department received $17,000 in grant monies from the Department of Justice which could be used for equipment.

Farris also said that the sidewalk near the Fire Department has been replaced and the helipad needs repair. He reported that Fire Chief John Meyer was seeking funding for the helipad so the city wouldn't incur costs.

He also reported that Jeff Childs and the mowing crew were keeping up with the mowing despite the blistering heat wave which has swept through the area in past weeks.

Unfinished business

The mayor asked for a motion to approve the minutes from every meeting since Jan. 24, with the exception of the June 27 meeting, bill lists since February 2006, and payroll since the week of March 14 through March 27. There was no motion made.

Councilmember Carolyn Ponting later asked to make the motion to pay payroll, but her request was not acknowledged.

Ponting made a motion to approve Resolution No. 2006-212, a resolution allowing the change of signatories on grant fund bank account 8512725 at First National Bank for the purpose of managing monies in the account and setting the signatories as John A. Meyer, Brandon Manker and Wesley Purchase. Councilmember Linda Jackson said she thought the account had been closed and asked the resolution be tabled pending clarification of the account number. Jackson made the motion to table the resolution, seconded by Councilmember Elbert "Bo" Purchase. The motion passed 4-0. Ponting passed. Councilmember Joey Thurston was absent.

Following an executive session to deal with issues of litigation, revolving loan fund and employee matters, Purchase made a motion, seconded by Councilmember Bobby Whitaker to continue the meeting until 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10. The motion passed 5-0.
