CAT Tracks for May 31, 2007 SPECIAL BOE MEETING - MINUTES

A special meeting of the Cairo Board of Education was held on Thursday, May 31st, for the purpose of interviewing candidates for superintendent.

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. and all members of the BOE were present.

Superintendent Gary Whitledge (who was not present at the first round of superintendent interviews last week) chose to present some information to the BOE under the "Recognition and Comments from Employees and Public" section of the agenda: (As soon as the BOE entered closed session, Superintendent Whitledge again excused himself for the evening.)

• The Summer Bridges program will begin on June 11th and will be conducted at Emerson Elementary this year. There will be seven teachers and one coach.
• In a separate program, there will be math tutoring for a number of 5th through 8th grade students. The program will be funded through Title I and conducted by Sylvan.
• The District's electronic capabilities have been upgraded in the areas of student management and financial management. Reportedly, attendance will be able to be accessed from the classroom. The total cost of the new programs is $29,059.94, but will NOT be paid with local funds.
• Various applications for grants are in the works, including a 4th Grade student mentoring program in the amount of $100,000.
• On Saturday night, there will be a public presentation of a "Cairo Report" based upon interviews conducted with over 40 community members. (Sorry, did not catch the place or time.)
• The District Improvement Plan is due June 15th, but due to the changing administration an extension is being requested.
• Painting is being done at CJSHS this summer.
• There will be a workshop for BOE members at Grand Chain conducted by the ROE. BOE members are encouraged to attend.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve the agenda for the Special Meeting.

The BOE voted to enter closed session at 6:07 p.m. (During this time, Constance Williams was interviewed for the superintendent position...for approximately one hour.) The BOE voted to exit closed session at 7:45 p.m.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to accept the resignation of CJSHS Executive Dean Tony Maltbia effective June 30th.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, June 5th, at 6 p.m.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 7:47 p.m.
