MUCH ADO ABOUT SOMETHING

But...your guess is as good as any!

The Cairo Board of Education held a special meeting tonight beginning at 6:03 p.m. All six members were present (Mallory arriving at 6:11 p.m.), along with the District's TWO attorneys, and an unusually large group of spectators.

When acting BOE President Arnold Burris asked if there were any employees or public wishing to be recognized, a parent rose and requested the opportunity to speak in closed session on a matter concerning her daughter. The BOE members indicated their willingness to do so.

Next, Don Patton went to the podium to offer his praise and support for the Cairo students who participated in the Dr. Walker Black History Bowl held at SIU-C...that they had acquitted themselves well in competition against Carbondale and Murphysboro - bringing home a trophy, which he displayed. Mr. Patton expressed his disappointment that he had seen nothing in the Cairo Citizen concerning their accomplishment and wondered if the circumstances would have been the same if this had been an athletic contest.

A motion was then made, seconded, and passed to approve the agenda for tonight's special meeting.

The BOE voted to enter closed session at 6:09 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 8:54 p.m. (The District's TWO attorneys were in the closed session for the entire time. Cha-Ching!)

Superintendent Gary Whitledge recommended that the BOE hire Mike Brown as CHS Assistant Baseball Coach. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to do so.

Mr. Whitledge informed the BOE that there was a major problem with girls' softball...a lack of student participation.

Mr. Whitledge asked the BOE members if they had any suggestions for a graduation speaker. (No names were suggested at this time.)

Mention was made of the passing of Karla Patton's father (this past Friday evening) and the passing of Naomi McPherson's aunt (this past Saturday morning). The funeral for Mr. Seavers (Karla' father) is scheduled for Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the family's church.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 8:56 p.m.
