LETTER TO THE EDITOR

From the March 8th Cairo Citizen...

Expresses congrats, concerns to Cairo Pilots

Dear Editor:

I have been following closely the activity and progress of the Cairo High School Pilots. I first want to say congratulations to the Pilot team. This regional championship will always be in my memory.

Secondly, I wish to express my concern at the punishment of a Cairo player who was attacked by a Meridian fan while he was warming up. I have talked with several of my long time friends from Alexander and Pulaski counties and none of them, even the most partisan Bobcat fan, could offer me any reason why the Pilot player should be withheld from the tourney and even more amazed when advised that the player was suspended from school for three days.

I played football, managed the basketball team, played baseball and ran track at Cairo High School. The teams that I was a part of did not have a single home game for my junior and senior years, yet I never felt that I could not defend myself if attacked.

The action of the Cairo Principal and Superintendent of suspending this boy without reason or justification is wrong. Had this boy actively sought out combat, I could accept their action, however, the arbitrary and capricious actions of these two administrators, who while issuing punishment, chose not be an active part of the community that pays them and allows them to add to their resumes for future employment opportunities. As a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, I personally find their actions unacceptable and violate my sense of fairness.

Lastly, I congratulate the Meridian Bobcats on a fine season; however, I question the necessity of bringing a police dog into the gym after the game. This strikes of complete disrespect and utter contempt for the people of Cairo as humans.

If anyone should take umbrage with the contents of this letter, feel free to write.

Respectfully,

Gary Y. Pang,

Cairo High Class of 1971
