Cairo City election shapes up as filing deadline passes
The Cairo municipal election is shaping up as thirty six Cairo residents have filed petitions by the Dec. 18 4 p.m. filing deadline.
The candidates will face off in a Feb. 27 primary election.
Residents will elect six councilmembers and the mayor in the 2007 election cycle.
The two candidates in each race receiving the most votes in the primary election will face off in the April 17, 2007 general election. The candidates elected in the April 17 election will take office May 1.
Candidates seeking office are (in filing order):
• Mayor: Paul F. Farris; Lonnie Burris; Bobby Whitaker; Judson Childs; Karl H. Klein; Joe E. Griggs; Carolyn Ponting; Monica L. Smith; and Nancy Philipper.
• Councilmember at Large: Christopher Davault; David Mason; R. D. Foxworthy; James R. "Bob" Conroy; and Linda Jackson.
• Councilmember, Ward 1: Joseph Holder; James Wisniewski; Darrell Thomas; and Elbert "Bo" Purchase.
• Councilmember, Ward 2: Thomas M. Simpson; Phillip Matthews; Esley Cornelius; Kathy McAllister; and Joseph M. Farrow.
• Councilmember, Ward 3: Lorenzo C. Nelson; Gregory Walker; Julia Schubert; Charles Koen; and Sandra Tarver.
• Councilmember, Ward 4: Gloria Sluder; Thomas Burris; Richard Pitcher; Linda King; and Shirley Bryant.
• Councilemember, Ward 5: Charles Allen Caldwell; Philip Hodges; and Tyrone Coleman.
