Randy Dunn to stay public schools chief, receives 24 percent raise

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - The Illinois State Board of Education on Thursday extended Randy Dunn's contract as state schools superintendent through next year.

The 47-year-old Dunn, on leave from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will serve through January 2007.

That will allow the board, which administers policy for more than 800 public school districts and two million pupils, to choose a successor with input from the person elected governor in November 2006.

A professor and chairman of SIUC's Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education, Dunn has served as interim schools chief since September.

That's when Gov. Rod Blagojevich named a largely new school board after signing legislation giving governors more power over the board.

Blagojevich's education adviser said late last month the board decided to ask Dunn to stay and Dunn accepted.

Dunn's salary will jump 24 percent to $142,500 from the $115,000.

The new contract will take effect Sept. 20, a board spokeswoman said.
