SPECIAL CAIRO BOE MEETING

The Cairo Board of Education held a Special Meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, for the purpose of discussing personnel issues.

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m., with Griggs, Burris, Brown, Posey, Mallory, and Gooden present. Also in attendance (for the entire meeting) was the District's attorney.

Since no employee or member of the public sought recognition to speak, the BOE voted to go into closed session at 6:07 p.m. Closed session lasted until 9:35 p.m.

From our "front row seats" (in the hallway), it is clear that the first two hours was spent on employment matters related to Lorenzo Nelson...since he and his union representative entered the closed session shortly after it began. The final hour of the session involved discussion and interview of a new high school basketball coach.

When the BOE exited closed session, the President of the Board read a resolution to ratify the suspension of Lorenzo Nelson from April 13th through May 2nd...with a return to work on May 3rd. A motion to do so was made, seconded, and approved.

Next, a recommendation was made to hire Thurlon Weaver as certified teacher and boys basketball coach at Cairo High School - contingent upon agreement on salary. A motion to do so was made, seconded, and approved.

Superintendent Whitledge made a few informational comments to conclude the meeting:

A motion was made, seconded, and approved to adjourn at 9:41 p.m.
