Republican incumbent jumps into ROE race
BY: CALEB HALE
ULLIN - Incumbent superintendent for the Regional Office of Education No. 2, Janet Ulrich, has filed for a spot on the March primary ballot. She will run on the Republican ticket against Thompsonville school district superintendent Greg Goins.
Ulrich, of Metropolis, has served in the regional office - covering Union, Johnson, Massac, Alexander and Pulaski counties - since July, when regional superintendent Dan Anderson opted for an early retirement. Ulrich was recommended by Anderson and appointed by the five county commissioner chairs.
Ulrich, 47, is a graduate of Governors State University, with a master's and administrative certificate from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Ulrich was a mathematics teacher for 24 years before accepting a job as assistant superintendent to Anderson in 2001.
Ulrich said she believes in promoting a "Southern Illinois voice" and having the regional office provide constant support to area schools through aggressive grant searches.
"Our school buildings must provide safe environments with classroom settings where children can learn," Ulrich said. "As we continue to receive cuts in all programs throughout the state, grants are basically what the regional office of education operates on from each year."
Ulrich is a Southern Illinois native.
