GOINS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY |
From today's Southern Illinoisan...
Official to run for regional school position
BY GAIL RISSI THOMAS
THOMPSONVILLE - Greg Goins, superintendent of Thompsonville High School and Grade School districts, has announced his candidacy for regional superintendent of schools for the Regional Office of Education 02, which includes Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union counties.
Goins is a Goreville resident and member of the Goreville Board of Education. He has had experience as a teacher and admini-strator in several Southern Illinois communities.
He spent two years as principal at Century High School, two years as a teacher, coach and athletic director for Joppa High School and three years as a high school English teacher at Carrier Mills.
A graduate of Goreville High School, Goins has earned degrees from Shawnee Community College, Southeast Missouri State University, and a master's degree in educational administration from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Goins says he shares the view of the State Board of Education, which declares the role of regional superintendent is key to improving education in the area.
"For a while there was a debate on the significance of those offices and there were some in state government looking at reducing the number of ROE from 45 to 22," Goins said. "But since then studies have shown that not only are they justifiable, but are vital to the success of education, especially in areas like Southern Illinois which have a large rural population and many low-income families."
"We have several different services, such as truancy programs and programs for the homeless, which we provide for the low-income population," he said.
Goins sees fiscal responsibility, safer schools and better communication between schools, administrators and parents askeys to his candidacy.
Goins, 38, will run as a Republican candidate in the March 21 primary election.
