CAIRO BOE SPECIAL MEETING |
The Cairo Board of Education held a special meeting on Thursday, August 7th...
The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. with Board members Griggs, Burris, Jones, Mallory, and Posey in attendance.
There was discussion about hiring another reading teacher at Bennett Elementary to take the position vacated by Zena Madison. However, the matter was tabled.
Superintendent Isom commented that the budget is coming along and will be ready to put on reading at the Board's regular meeting on August 21st.
The superintendent also announced that Bennett Elementary, Cairo Junior High, and Cairo High are on the "School Choice" list - that the test scores did not improve significantly. Parents will get a letter informing them of their right to withdraw their children from these attendance centers and send them to a surrounding district. However, the "surrounding district" can decline to accept the students...which is what happened last year.
The Board approved student handbooks for Emerson/Bennett and Cairo Junior High/Cairo High.
The Board voted to go into closed session at 6:12 p.m. The Board voted to exit closed session at 7:25 p.m.
The superintendent recommended and the Board approved the hiring of the following personnel...(Please excuse any mispellings of names! Also...although I have used the term "aide", the individuals identified as such are referred to as Educational Support Professionals by the IEA and NEA in recognition of their importance to the education profession.)
One final topic of discussion was a request by the City of Cairo to allow Deana Pecord to use the CJHS Gym for a dance school. This matter will be further investigated.
The Board adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
Once again I am indebted to De De O'Shea (on the mend from summer surgery) for attending this meeting and taking detailed notes. I was enroute from an IEA meeting in Springfield and arrived at 7:38 p.m. - just in time for adjournment. Lucky me! Thank you, De De!!!
