BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

The Cairo Financial Oversight Panel held a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. on June 1st...

FOP members Jack Hill and Sam Harbin were in attendance, along with the three FOP administrators. Out of the ordinary...neither Superintendent Isom nor any Cairo BOE members were present.

The first order of business was to approve a proposal by the Biebel Roofing Company to install a new roof at Garrison. FOP members expressed concern over air quality issues that had affected some Central Office employees and hoped that stopping leaks with a new roof would result in the elimination of the problem. It will be monitored and, if necessary, the use of an air purification system will be explored.

Next up...new digs for CJHS students? The FOP administrators presented a plan for remodeling the high school shop area - the "Green Hall" - to house 7th and 8th Grade students for the coming school year. The plan would involve the construction of temporary walls to create seven classrooms. If this could be done by using District personnel and/or by hiring some temporary workers, it was felt that the project could be done within the current budget. After some concern over whether the work would meet health and life safety regulations, the Panel asked that the plan be reviewed (soon) by architects...hopefully for free. The FOP - pending approval by the Cairo BOE - set deadlines of June 30th to remove all items currently occupying the shop area space and August 1st for the completion of construction so that it would be ready for occupancy. The FOP expressed a hope that the Cairo BOE would call a special meeting in the near future to consider this proposal and to take up the "superintendency issue".

In a final "buildings" issue...Regional Superintendent Dan Anderson expressed an interest in renting part of the old Cairo Junior High School building - as a replacement for the old Adult School building. He also indicated that other agencies - e.g. JAMP, Delta, Southern Seven, Shawnee College - might be interested in renting parts of the building...that he would be willing to make the inquiries. Superintendent Anderson indicated that his hope was to eventually create a community learning center in Cairo. The FOP indicated their receptiveness to the idea.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
