ANDERSON OFFERED SUPERINTENDENCY

The Cairo Board of Education held a Special Meeting on May 6, 2004 to consider student disciplinary action, buildings and grounds, and personnel issues...

The scheduled 6 p.m. meeting was not called to order until 6:24 p.m. - when a fourth board member arrived to make a quorum. (Griggs, Jones, Mallory, Huff, and Gooden were in attendance.)

-No employees or public answered the call to address the Board.

-Superintendent Isom announced that no estimate for summer work at CJSHS had been received, so the matter was tabled.

-Superintendent Isom informed the BOE that CJSHS Principal Williams had made a request for an 8th Grade dinner and dance in lieu of graduation. According to Principal Williams, the 8th Grade had raised $300 of the $650 required to host the event. She appealed to the Board to pay the remaining $350. Superintendent Isom made that recommendation and the BOE approved.

-Superintendent Isom informed the BOE that the Teacher Aides have agreed to a negotiations session on May 10th at 4 p.m. Furthermore, the Secretaries have agreed to a negotiations session on May 10th at 6 p.m. The Superintendent expressed his optimism that negotiations with both groups would be concluded during each scheduled session and be ready for approval at the BOE's rescheduled regular meeting on May 13th. (WE should be so lucky! But...then again...that's not our "problem" until next year!! Whew!!!)

The BOE voted to go into closed session at 6:30 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 8:27 p.m.

-Superintendent Isom recommended and the BOE approved the expulsion of Student #050604 for the remainder of the school year, along with a stipulation that the student show proof of receiving anger management counseling as a condition to re-enter school in the Fall.

-Superintendent Isom recommended and the BOE approved "the agreement" with Lorenzo Nelson.

-BOE President Griggs made a motion to offer the position of Superintendent to Nate Anderson...

(If he accepts, Anderson would come full circle, having begun his administrative career in October 1988 as Cairo High School Principal. He currently serves as Superintendent of East St. Louis District 189.) The motion was seconded and approved.

The BOE adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
