CAT Tracks for October 2, 2002
CALL ME POLLYANNA

September 30th came and went with no reports of paycheck errors. I was almost moved to issue a bulletin..."CNN Breaking News...Payday Passes in CSD #1 With No Report of Paycheck Errors!" Oh, silly me...

Sure enough, at least one CAT must endure our bi-monthly ritual. On September 13th, this teacher notified the Central Office that deductions were made from her paycheck for two insurance policies that she had canceled last Spring. The person responsible for making the deductions admitted (!) that an oversight had been made and said that it would be corrected on the September 30th check...since the total error was less than $50.

Well...not only was the reimbursement NOT made, the improper deduction was made again!

Now the total paycheck error exceeds $50...the magical number that activates Section 4.15...namely, "In the event of errors in a paycheck exceeding $50, correction shall be made immediately after written notification by the employee and subsequent verification by the employer. Any additional payment shall be made within twenty-four (24) hours of said notification excluding holidays and weekends."

The teacher put the notification in writing on Tuesday morning and sent it to the Cental Office. (Rumor has it that the person responsible was once again absent from work on payday...) When the teacher called to verbally report the error, she was informed that the DFP was not in due to a dental appointment...might be in by noon. Deja vu...all over again!

Will the CAT receive her "due" within the required 24-hour period? Will the CAT have to file and fight a grievance to receive what is rightfully hers? Stay tuned...Don't forget to watch our next episode of "As the District Churns".

AND...who knows...YOU may have the starring role!

GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE...

  • Mama CAT (i.e. the Association) did get its money on September 30th...as promised.
  • Also...the teacher who was confronted last payday with "Maybe you didn't take out a loan"...she did. Her loan payment was taken out of another teacher's paycheck...in addition to that teacher's own loan payment! Hey...it was perfectly understandable...I mean the teachers do have the same last name!
  • Oh, and one I didn't mention last time...remember the big hoopla over withholding too much taxes from lump-sum payments..."We have to...the IRS demands it!" One teacher had to inform the Central Office that they failed to withhold federal taxes from her September 13 paycheck! Isn't that required?
  • Somebody stop me!
  • Till next time...and there WILL be a next time...as sure as death and taxes! Did someone say taxes?
