The Puma
The puma (Felis
concolor), also known throughout its range as mountain lion or
cougar, is one of the most widely distributed mammals in the Americas,
known to range from northern Canada and the United States through central and
south America to southern Argentina and Chile (to at least 510S and up to 4,500
m elevation). Although highly elusive and chiefly solitary,
puma are the most adaptable of the all of world's cat species and
are found in many climates from northern to tropical, desert to rainforest, and
lowland to mountains, as well as in forest, woodland, and bush habitats
with abundant game. Characterized by a uniform tawny yellow-brown
color, the widespread but always uncommon or rare puma is looked upon as endangered, a result mainly of
excessive hunting, as puma will often attack livestock where
their habitat has been converted to pasture land and their
natural prey base has been significantly reduced. Many
populations throughout its range have, unfortunately, been hunted to complete extinction
by ranchers.
