Some moments of Comedy

Brideshead is one of the most tragic stories ever told.
Most of the characters end up quite low and no one is really
very happy after the first brief period of bliss experienced
by Charles and Sebastian. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t
hilarious at times.
        Kevin Sims has given some examples of these highlights.

Visually - a few examples:

 - Anthony discerning Sebastian in the pub behind his false
whiskers

 - The rear shot of the two sunbathers on the roof!

 - Sebastian's fall into the fountain

 - The Salvation Army marching into the fray in the Commercial
Road

 - Boy Mulcaster being carried aloft in the fight.

Dialogue - a few examples:

 - "We used the same coloured varnish for our toenails"

 - "Ecstasy of the naughtiest kind"

 - "Take me to Charles' unhealthy pictures"

 - "Yum, Yum. How the students stare"

 Boy Mulcaster:

- "Why Ma. I didn't recognise you in your finery"

 - "At Oxford I tried to get drunk on more than one occasion"

 Lord Marchmain

- "Was she, do you think, referring to his undoubted
virginity?"

 Lunt:

 - "I'm sure its a pleasure to clean up after him"

 - … as he exits with flowers: "Thank you Sir. There is no Mrs Lunt"

 Sebastian:

 - "On Queen Alexandra's day its all open for a shilling"

 - "There are lots of us. Look them up in Debrett"

 - "I want to read about a woman in Hull who's been using an
instrument"

 Of course the King of the comic moments is Ryder's Father:

 - "Cousin Melchior was imprudent in his investments and got
- into a very queer street. He went to Australia"

 - "Science annihilates distance"

 - "Living in London you must sadly miss your national game.
Cricket"

 - "Was it her little moustache you objected to or her very
large feet?"

 and of course there are many, many more...
