I read this book about the 1863 New York Civil War draft riots before I went to see "Gangs of New York" This book covers the part of the same era. I was glad I read it first as it made many of the things in the movie clearer. Many of the main characters are Irish immigrants and survivors of the famine. Great descriptions of the poor Irish living on the slums of New York and the roles of race, sex, class, etc. in this violent historical event.Read more at Amazon about Kevin Baker's Paradise Alley
Wonderful books. The really neat thing is that Flanagan tells the same story as seen through multiple narrators. Although the narrators may have very different views, I managed to identify, at least in part, with many of them. There are no 'bad guys' and 'good guys'. Just people who see events a little differently. I suppose that is the essence of history. These are not fast reading books but books to be enjoyed slowly.
The 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. The first of the series. I found my copy in hardback at a Brandeis used book sale for a dollar. You probably won't be as lucky but take my word for it the book is worth the price asked here and more. If you can find it cheaper, congratulations. If not, order it here.Read more at Amazon about Flanagan's The Year of the French
The Irish quest for freedom continues into the middle and late 1800s. Although the second of a series, it does not depend on the first. Details of the Fenian Rising of 1867 and the next 40 years from a very local point of view. Unfortunately, the publisher is out of stock but Amazon will try to locate a copy for you.Ask Amazon about The Tenants of Time
The quest continues with the events leading up to 1916 and those that follow. I did not like this one nearly as much as the other 2. This one was merely "good" while the others were totally absorbing.Read more at Amazon about Flanagan's The End of the Hunt
Enjoyable. I've liked nearly everything I've read of hers. She certainly has a magical touch in recalling ancient Ireland. Her retelling of historical and mythical events is awesome. Here's some of my favorites. I'll be adding more so come back later to see my additions.
Born American and now Irish by choice, Morgan Llywelyn is a well known historical novelist. Here she makes use of her expertise inhistoric research and her love of Ireland in recommending books for those of us with a strong interst in Ireland. Short reviews (most are 2-3 pages) give an excellent flavor of a wide variety of works. I thoroughly enjoyed the reviews of books I have read but more importantly this serves as a guide to further reading.Read more at Amazon about The Essential Library for Irish Americans
Her lastest novel. A departure from her more typical settings long, long ago. From the Titanic to the Easter Rising and related events. I liked it.Read more at Amazon about 1916

The story of Brian Boru, who united the Irish and became a legend. Unfortunately for Ireland the unity did not last very long. This was the first Morgan Llywelyn book I read. A fine introduction to celtic Ireland and this wonderful writer. Reissued as a paperback in 1996.Read more at Amazon about Lion of Ireland
