A record 18 teams have entered in the NPC’s second year, Taranaki, Wanganui, Nelson Bays and Marlborough the first-time entrants. The competition is divided into four sections, Northern (Northland, North Harbour, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waikato and Bay of Plenty), Central (Poverty Bay, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Wanganui), Southern (Nelson Bays, Marlborough, Hanan Shields, Southland) and Combined (Manawatu, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago). Each team in the section plays home and away.

At the end of the round robin the Combined section has a play-off with one v four and two v three, followed by a final. Central and Southern will see the top two teams in each section play each other in finals to conclude their
involvement in the NPC.

The top two teams in Northern play the winner and loser of the Combined section final. The two winners of these semi-finals then contest the NPC final. The competition is to create even contests and will evolve as more teams are added to future NPC’s.
