Parliamentary Procedure Q&A
Q:
- Does a motion to adjourn need a second?
Does it need a vote?
- Does a motion to accept the minutes need a second?
Does it need a vote?
- Richard Leff, Dec. 22, 1999
A:
- Normally, the motion to Adjourn requires a second.
Note, however, that in small boards and small committees, seconds are generally not required for any motion.
(RONR p. 478.)
The motion to adjourn is adopted by a majority vote or by unanimous consent.
- If there is a formal motion to adopt the minutes, it requires a second unless in a small board or committee.
It, too, would be adopted by a majority vote, although it is usually adopted by unanimous consent.
That is, after the minutes are read, the chair says, "Are there corrections?"
He pauses, then says, "If not, the minutes stand approved as read."
