Parliamentary Procedure Q&A
Q:
If you have a quorum at the beginning of a meeting and someone leaves, leaving you without a quorum, can you continue the meeting?
- P.B., Dec. 21, 1999
A:
You cannot conduct any business in the absence of a quorum, but you can continue with your program.
There are a few other things you can do:
- Adjourn.
- Fix the time to which to adjourn.
(This establishes a continuation of the current meeting to take place before your next regular meeting.)
- Recess.
(Presumably to collect enough members to regain a quorum.)
See RONR pp. 341-44.
