Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: Does Robert's Rules apply to a vote where nominations were made and some offices ran unopposed or with only one nominee? Is a vote on these offices with write in candidates appropriate? I would think that since no one else was nominated, that the nominee would be considered unopposed. - T.T., Dec. 10, 1999

A: If your bylaws state that an election must be conducted by ballot, you cannot dispense with this rule even if there's only one nominee (running unopposed) unless the bylaws stipulate this condition. See RONR p. 433-34. Write-in votes for floor-nominated (and even non-nominated) candidates are appropriate.
