Parliamentary Procedure Q&A
Q:
I belong to a club that has a board of trustees and officers with the commodore as the highest ranking.
According to our bylaws, meetings are the second Saturday of every month.
A trustee meeting is held first, followed two hours later by a general membership meeting.
The general membership meeting is attended by choice.
In fact, the hall is too small to accomodate all the members should they wish to attend.
Does the commodore have the right to single out a member and tell him that he must attend a general membership meeting?
- W.R., Dec. 2, 1999
A:
No.
Legislative bodies have the right to compel attendance, but voluntary societies do not.
