Parliamentary Procedure Q&A
Q:
If nominations for officers are made and the nominations are closed, two persons are running for the same position, can we have a third party elected to the position by means of a write-in ballot?
Can the write-in space be put on the same ballot as the others that are running?
The third party is an active member of the same organization.
There is nothing in our bylaws to state anything different.
- W.S., Nov. 4, 1999
A:
Yes.
There is no requirement that a person be nominated in order to receive votes or win elections.
Most ballots reserve a space for write-in candidates.
