Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: Can you give me some information regarding the making of a motion that expresses the membership's confidence in an officer of the organization? For example, it is sometimes done when looking for a congregation's confidence in the pastor or minister of a church. - Rene Groeneveld, Oct. 14, 1999

A: RONR says nothing about this type of vote. As I understand it, a vote of non-confidence is similar to an opinion poll. The result of the vote is non-binding; that is, the officer is not removed from office if he loses such a vote. However, as a result of losing the confidence of the organization, the officer will often resign as an act of good faith.

If no resignation is forthcoming, you should consult RONR as to the procedure for removal of an officer.
