Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: What are the duties and responsibilities of the Sergeant at Arms? - Ethel Goffner, Oct. 12, 1999

A: RONR does not say much about the Sergeant at Arms. It mentions, on p. 345, that he may be instructed to find absent members of a legislature and "bring them before the house."

On p. 643, it says he may be asked to escort unruly persons from a meeting, using only that force necessary and no more.

That's about all RONR says about it. In my own experience, the Sergeant is responsible for setting up the room for meetings, for safekeeping of the organization's property (such as lecterns, banners, ballot boxes, and audio/visual equipment) and for hospitality.
