Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q:
  1. Can a person be nominated for more than one office on the same ballot?
  2. If the vote was taken at the meeting and tallied there, should the count be revealed at the same time?
- J.J., Nov. 11, 1998

A:

  1. Certainly. If the election is by single ballot (i.e., the voter marks just one ballot containing nominations for all offices) and a person is elected to more than one office, he may decline election of whatever office(s) he wishes. A re-ballotting for the vacant offices would then be in order. If the election is not by single ballot (i.e., the voter marks a ballot for each office) and a person is elected to an office, he may decline the nomination of subsequent offices. (RONR p. 424, 432)
  2. Yes. (RONR p. 411)
