Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: Is there a form of punishment less than removal from office? Our Club President has thus far failed in his duties to act as a leader or as a representative of our organization, continually failing to follow through on his commitments and promises, or to communicate with the Board and membership. We believe there may be hope that his behavior will improve if the [severity] of the situation is made clear to him, and are willing to help him finish his term until May. We have considered a censure and appointment of an ad-hoc Presidential Advisor who would, in reality, take over most of the actual organization and communication duties of the President, while allowing the elected President to continue to sit.
Thanks for your opinion! - S.L., Nov. 2, 1998

A: After emphasizing the desirability of avoiding formal disciplinary procedures, RONR lists the following general punishments:

(RONR p. 638-639)

For deposition from office, check whether your bylaws say "... shall serve for x years or until a successor is elected," or just "... shall serve for x years." If it's the latter, a trial is needed; the former requires only that the officer's election be rescinded and a successor put in place.
