Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: A motion was made and seconded, discussion followed. The person who seconded the first motion moved to amend it to change the wording of a specific sentence. The motion to amend was seconded, voted on, and adopted. The first motion was then voted on and adopted as amended.

How do I write this in my minutes? - Anon., Oct. 28, 1998

A: The minutes would appear something like this:

"Mr. Smith moved that the organization purchase a Clydesdale horse. Mrs. Jones moved to amend this motion by striking out 'Clydesdale' and inserting 'Morgan.' The motion to amend was adopted after debate. The main motion was then adopted as amended."

Note that secondings and the details of debate are omitted. (See RONR pp. 458-463.)
