The Rheinische Schule for Physically Handicapped has been operating as a day school since its founding in 1965. The Landschaftsverband Rheinland (regional government agency) is in charge of this school, and it pays for certain expenses such as daily bus transport and lodging in boarding schools.
The Rheinische Schule for Physically Handicapped covers the education grades of the lower level (grades 5-10) and of the upper level of the gymnasiale Oberstufe (grades 11-13). This educational system is unique in Nordrhein-Westfalen as physically handicapped students do not only come from Nordrhein-Westfalen, but also from adjacent federal states.
The students are educated according to the standard curriculum; that is: the curriculum of the Hauptschule und Realschule is applied for the lower level, while the curriculum of the gymnasiale Oberstufe is used for the upper level.
After graduation, the students receive a certificate (Allgemeine Hochschulreife) that allows them to study at any university. After 12 school years, the pupils can receive a certificate (Fachhochschulreife) that enables them to study at a technical or training college.
The Rheinische Schule is housed in the same building with a local Realschule, a school for non-handicapped pupils. This permits handicapped and non-handicapped pupils to be together not only during lessons but also in their leisure time. In the lower level handicapped and non-handicapped pupils are taught jointly in various subjects. In the upper level another model of co-operation is practised: the non-handicapped graduates form the local Realschule are admitted in handicapped classes.
Thus the Rheinische Schule offers the physically handicapped children not only ample variety in education but also gives them a wide range of therapeutical support throughout their school life.
This support system includes:
The Therapeutic Department
Physiotherapy has been an integral part of the school since it founding. The scope of this service has been extended continuously, and the latest methods of treatment have been available due to regular vocational staff training.
The Nursing Department
Nurses manage this department. They cover a wide range of medical/nursing care. The main work load consists of regular caring for pupils in need (toilet help, measuring of blood pressure, care and prevention of decubitus). This department is in close contact with the school physician. The nurses also cooperate with rehabilitation centres, boarding houses, and especially maintain close contact with the parents.
These services are not only available during school hours but also on excursions or class trips lasting from 3-10 days.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is provided for deficiencies in mobility and perception. The goal of this therapy is to equip the pupils with the most attainable independence in all developmental areas. It could include individual treatment objectives: improving gross and fine motor movements, developing the sensory motor functions, practising everyday life activities, improving the interaction and communication with the environment.
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy is offered as individual therapy at school. Language, speech an breathing impairments are treated.
Psychotherapeutic and Psychological Counselling
An analytical psychotherapist and a psychologist are available. These professionals are subject to confidentiality. Consultation takes place by appointment. Pupils can request psychodiagnostic tests and counselling. Specific cases call for psychotherapeutic treatments.
Assistance Through Social Educators and Aides
Social workers deal mainly with organisational objectives. Emphasis is on pupils' care and counselling as well as co-operating with other professional staff members. In addition, this group maintains contact with the most varied institutions. It also helps facilitate the smooth transaction of written tests and finals as well as with organising class trips.
Guidance Counselling For Career and Higher Education Choices
When deciding upon an occupation, every student has the legal right to receive counselling through the employment agency. A representative of this government agency co-operates closely with our school. Since physically handicapped are confronted with particular difficulties concerning their integration into the work force, our school offers additional individual counselling to assist in this complex task.
