EDUCATION

Board of Governors

There are eight members of the Board including two parent governors and one teacher governor responsible for overseeing the running and development of Fleming Fulton. A meeting is held in the school to give parents and others the opportunity to discuss the report and related matters with the governors.

Nursery

The nursery aims to create a flexible, developing, learning environment in which each child will actively pursue his interests with the guidance and support of members of the school's inter-disciplinary staff. The initial aim is to introduce each child to a classroom situation and to provide a secure basis from which to attend therapy and to cope with unfamiliar adults and situations.

PRIMARY DEPARTMENT

The primary department consists of seven mixed ability, peer group classes each containing no more than ten children. The Northern Ireland curriculum is followed. Each pupil participates as fully as possible in a programme containing Science, History, Geography, RE and Art and Design as well as Maths and English. We are very fortunate in that PE and Music are provided by the Specialists in the Secondary Department. Within the classroom there is close co-operation between the teacher and the childcare staff as they work together to try to meet the needs of each child.

Help also comes from the therapy and nursing staff.

SECONDARY DEPARTMENT

The department is staffed by a team of secondary subject specialists who teach across the ability range. We are delivering the programme of study of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

In addition, the pupils study keyboard skills, personal social health and sex education and study skills as additional time-tabled subjects.

In year 11 some pupils begin a 2-year course leading to GCSE examinations and/or other courses leading to nationally recognised qualifications (details of all courses and syllabuses are available from school). Examination results are provided as an insert at the back of the prospectus. Recent additions to these courses are qualifications leading to GNVQ and NVQ certification.

Pupils have the option to stay on at school until they are 19 years old in order to complete examination courses and participate in vocational preparation and guidance.

We earnestly try to recognise the differing academic needs of the pupils and as a consequence endeavour to meet the individual needs of each pupil in the delivery of the school curriculum.

Recognising that learning difficulties occur across the range of ability we seek to help the pupils work through support teaching, creating small groups, team teaching and individual programmes of study.

Additional Educational Support

A support service is organised throughout the school for pupils who require extra educational help. This assistance may be offered in a class setting or on a small group or individual basis. Members of the interdisciplinary team at Fleming Fulton work with children who have additional disabilities such as speech and language impairments, pupils who require a lot of personal attention due to the complexity or severity of their disabilities and others with learning difficulties.

The aims of these programmes are to develop children's language and communication skills and to enhance individual's means of access to the school curriculum.

SCHOOL CHILD CARE DEPARTMENT

There are thirty eight staff who are responsible for the general physical, emotional, and social training of the pupils. They have a special relationship with the children and help them overcome worries and difficulties they may have about surgery, treatment, personal problems and their attitude to their disability.

Staff supervise meals and playtimes and play a large part in arranging holidays and outings both during term time and the summer holidays. They work with teachers and therapists as part of the school team encouraging the children to reach their full potential;

The senior staff arrange dental appointments and work closely with the senior dental surgeon and her staff who treat the pupils in the new school dental surgery.

The Head of Child Care co-ordinates all Education and Library Board transport services for the pupils.

Education Welfare Officer

An Education Welfare Officer (EWO) from the Belfast Education and Library Board visits Fleming Fulton once a month to meet senior staff. This officer assists with the monitoring of pupils' attendance at school and in association with colleagues throughout the province investigates the reasons why any child might have a significant pattern of absences from school.

Education Welfare Officers also make occasional home visits to support home/school communications and may be able to provide transport for families to enable parents to attend school meetings about their children.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Nursing Department

There is a team of nurses working to provide medical and nursing care including first aid, treatment of post-operative wounds, the administration of medicines etc. Each pupil has a health appraisal once a year, this includes vision screening, weight, blood pressure and a hearing test when appropriate. The children are encouraged to become self reliant and independent and to take as much responsibility for themselves as possible.

Orthopaedic Department

The Orthopaedic Sister visits school. She works in conjunction with the orthotist to measure, rough fit and fit orthoses (callipers and footwear). They are part of the school team which, with the physiotherapist, accesses the child who has an orthopaedic problem and tries to prevent or correct deformities with the aid of orthoses which are ordered by the Orthopaedic Consultant.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational therapy staff treat children from throughout the school. We assess independence in all activities of daily living, and follow through training programmes relevant to the age and ability of the child. The aim is to develop hand and arm function and co-ordination through play activities. Children are assessed using a variety of switches, so that the most suitable one can be found and used in the classroom when access to a computer is necessary for recording work.

PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT

Physiotherapy treatment begins for the pre-school child by means of a referral from a paediatrician to a child development unit in a local hospital.

In school, treatment is given as part of the daily timetable and liaison with classroom staff ensures consistent handling throughout the school day.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY

The speech therapy department consists of three full time and two part time members of staff. The speech and language therapy department recognises the right of every individual to have an effective communication system regardless of disability.

Treatment as far as possible takes place in association with colleagues in the interdisciplinary team throughout the school.
