Rome was not always ruled by emperors. For hundreds of years there was a republic, ruled by consuls. The preeminent consul of the Roman world was Gaius Julius Caesar, and because of his successful military campaigns, he became popular. Yet he aroused jealousy among his rivals. When Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius led the plot to stab him to death on 15 March 44 BCE, Rome was no longer a republic.
