Welcome to my collection of favorite passages from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. I am in the process of collecting more (there are so many) later in June.
Mirror Dance
The Countess on great deeds:
"Are you saying that no matter how screwed up I was, you'd still expect me
to work wonders?" Appalling.
She considered this. "Yes," she said serenely. "In fact, since no one is
perfect, it follows that all great deeds have been accomplished out of
imperfection. Yet they were accomplished, somehow, all the same."
Mark talks to Miles about Winterfair, the Barrayaran equivalent of Christmas:
"All this time," Mark confided to Miles in a low voice, "I was worried
about never having received a present. It never crossed my mind to worry
about never having given one."
All true wealth is biological, the Count had said. Mark finally saw exactly
what he meant. For all his million Betan dollars, he could not buy this,
the light in Kareen's eyes.
Mark meets his biological parents for the first time:
"Killing you was the entire reason for my existence. Two years ago
I was all primed for it..."
"Take heart," advised the Countess. "Most people exist for no reason
at all."
Memory
Emperor Gregor has just learned that Miles turned down an incredible bribe.
"If you wish. My Lord Auditor." Gregor had a strange look on his
face, staring down at Miles; Miles shifted uncomfortably. It wasn't surprise
or amazement, which would have unraveled to an insult, after all. Awe?
Surely not. "What stopped you? I too want to know why, you know. You owe
me that much."
"I don't... quite know how to put it." He searched for, and rather to
his surprise found, that odd calm place inside, still there. It helped.
"Some prices are just too high, no matter how much you may want the prize.
The one thing you can't trade for your heart's desire is your heart."
"Oh," said Gregor.
