Death's Gift

death comes too soon, unbidden
why rage ? why whinge ?
for death comes unlooked for, unasked
yet will not come when bidden

death comes unasked, unbidden
snatching the sunlit ones, unwanted
leaving behind sorrow and emptiness
yet will not come when bidden

death comes unseen, unbidden
taking those for whom life
abounds with joy and hope
denying those who bid death come

death comes unasked, unbidden
mercy and strength concealed within
mere heartbeat away from the true seeker
lifetime's pain distant, merciful, where doubt remains
