As I said earlier, Sophie didn't care for my insistence on attempting to systematize the things that we discussed, and still I continued to try. I suspect that she understood my need to do so as being an intrinsic part of who I was that was not a part of who she was, and so she accepted me and my constant returning in our discussions to that perspective. I never had the opportunity to show Sophie the outline below, since it grew out of my notes and creates categories which she may never have intended to make. Nevertheless, I think that she would agree with the basic flow of thought implied which is that you must move from the basic to the complex, walk before you can run, build your foundation before the walls go up. With that disclaimer, here is my outline of wisdom for living:
I) Truth
Decide on the basic foundational truths in life and give yourself to them. Work out your understanding of God and who you are. Everything flows from there. Build your values and your priorities and lay them as the solid foundation upon which everything else rests.
II) Take responsibility for:
a. The fact that life is choices and they are up to you to make.
b. The consequences of the choices you make.
III) At each decision and choice, be realistic about:
a. How your choices relate to your values and priorities.
b. The practical implications of your choice.
c. The costs and benefits of the choice.
IV) Learn to be accepting of:
a. The consequences of your choices.
b. The certainty that you will sometimes make bad decisions.
b. The inevitable appearance of difficulties in your life.
c. The present moment as a necessary part of your path.
V) Always keep your perspective since:
a. Few things are irrevocable, you can always make the next choice.
b. Everything changes. Nothing is final. Nothing very good or very bad ever lasts forever.
c. You are unique. Comparing your successes or your failures to another person, ultimately tells you nothing at all.
VI) Always be thankful.
a. You are alive, never underestimate the miracle of your existence.
b. There is no other reasonable choice to build a life on.
c. No matter what your circumstance, each day brings a chance to start over, a new opportunity. You are never without hope, no matter how things look, because you don’t know what tomorrow may bring.
