A Fruit Fly Web Quest!

Introduction

You and your colleagues are known for your excellence in solving genetic mysteries. A small business that raises and sells exotic fruit flies for pets contacted you for help. Click here to read a copy of their letter.

Task

In order to help FFFF International you first need to learn more about fruit flies in general before you can undertake your genetic experiments. Specifically, you need to learn:

The life stages of the fruit fly

The average lifespan of the fruit fly

The environmental needs of the fruit fly (what it eats at each stage, and where it can be found in nature)

The main body parts of the fruit fly

How to tell male and female flies apart

Process

  1. Assign each member of your group one job:

The Developmental Biologist studies the life cycle of the fruit fly.

The Physiologist studies the anatomy of the fruit fly.

The Environmental Biologist studies the habitat and needs of the fruit fly, and assists her colleagues in completing their reports.

  2. Use the websites in the Resources Page to conduct research on your assigned topic.

  3. As a group, create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing your research. This presentation will become part of a larger presentation on the genetics of the fruit fly cultures sent to us from FFFF International. For instructions on creating the Power Point presentation, click here.

Evaluation

Your Power Point presentation will be graded as follows:

Is the information you have detailed and accurate for

The life cycle and life span of the fruit fly? (15 points)

The anatomy (body parts) of the fruit fly, and determining the sex of the fruit fly? (15 points)

The habitat description of the fruit fly? (10 points)

Is your Power Point presentation neatly done, and were all directions followed for creating the presentation? (10 points)

The total number of points for this project is 50.
