These are the words to the song Get Together by the Youngbloods. In my opinion it is the defining songs of the Sixties. However, others say For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield was the defining song of the Sixties. Still others say that it was All You Need Is Love by the Beatles, or Sky Pilot by The Animals, Put A Little Love In Your Heart by Jackie Deshannon, Love The One You’re With by Crosby, Stills, & Nash, San Francisco by Scott McKenzie, Aquarius by The Fifth Dimension, Go Ask Alice by Jefferson Airplane, Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds, Blowin In The Wind by Bob Dylan, Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival, People Got To Be Free by The Rascals, I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die Rag by Country Joe and the Fish, Abraham, Martin and John by Dion, and Eve Of Destruction by Barry McGuire. There are many other songs, too numerous to mention here, that one could name that helped distinguish the Time Of The Season when blood ran high. But regardless of whether or not the one hit wonder by the Youngbloods was the defining song of the Sixties, it was one of the songs that, along with these others, helped define the “Music Generation.” It helped capture the spirit that moved an entire generation. But it wasn’t just the younger generation who were united against all the corruption. They were children of God from all ages, races, ethnicities and beliefs who were in rebellion. (Red and yellow, black and white they are precious in His sight Jesus loves the little children of the world.) They were men, women and children who were trying to stop an deceitful war forced upon them by a corrupt government. They were a generation of war veterans who threw their war medals into the trash and were proud to oppose a corrupt war. (I threw away my Naval Achievement medal with a combat V and I am still proud that I did so as an act of protest against that money-making war!) They were a community of people who were trying to stop the contamination of our environment by corporate giants that care more about making a profit than they do about keeping our lakes, our streams, our forest and our air clean and our wildlife from becoming extinct. They were citizens who rebelled against the lies told to them and the crimes that had been committed against them in Dallas, in Memphis, in Los Angeles and in numerous other cities. It was the music of that generation that held the children together, kept them going and gave them a goal. The music was their prayer for help to end all the corruption on earth. But the corruption in the government and the corruption in the corporate offices which the children opposed did not see that unity, nor did they hear the music binding the children together as one. To them it was just a bunch of “hippies” playing loud, obnoxious music. Then, the day the music died, the day the music began to be an instrument used primarily for the purpose of making money instead of a source of inspiration for peace and love, on that day the children were scattered like sheep without shepherd. But there is still a chance to end all the corruption on earth. As long as we are alive we have a chance to win, to turn back the hand of time, to recapture that spirit which united the Music Generation. There is still a chance to stop all the deceitful wars. Today is “our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace,” to quote President John F. Kennedy. First of all, each and every person has to make a commitment to return to God and begin to love one another right now. Each and every person who honestly wants to Let There Be Peace On Earth must make a personal commitment to let peace begin within themselves and let peace be their goal, to be their solemn vow. Then they must endorse leaders who will follow truth and justice. Leaders from all walks of life and fields of interest who will look out for the good of all the people, not just their own personal agenda. Finally, they must endorse leaders who will stop all the corrupt wars and who will stop trying to impose a Pax Americana upon the world with American industrial might and American weaponry, for such will not bring peace for anyone. It sounds as though I'm calling for a return to the turbulent Sixties, with all its songs about peace and love and all its anti-war demonstrations. Yes, I am. But I am not calling for anyone to resort to riots, violence, fighting and that sort of thing. I am asking for all those who honestly want peace on earth to unite in peaceful demonstration and non-violent protest against the war and against all the corruption that is destroying this world. I want all those children of God from all faiths and all walks of life who honestly want peace on earth to recognize that What The World Needs Now Is Love, not war. I want all the children of God to rise up and unite against all the corruption on earth. Please End All Corruption on Earth. |
