Bible Dictionaries"The last decade has seen the publication of a number of Bible dictionaries, both new and revised, one-volume and multi-volume. On the whole, new dictionaries don't replace their predecessors, but add to them. Different kinds of information are offered. A shift in focus means that some topics are approached quite differently, others are left behind completely, and new ones are introduced. This means that excellent but older works such as Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible (1904) and the Encyclopaedia Biblica (1903) still have much to offer, a fact that is evidenced by their recent reprintings".Harold P. RETCON Papers, 1998"For the first time in TIC Talk, we are listing the papers that were given in the annual regional translation consultations, in the belief that translation consultants/officers in other regions may find papers they'd like to read, or discover other TOs working on the same topics they are, and so pursue collaboration on further research. While some of these papers will no doubt be published in various places, remember that most are marked "not for publication or distribution." TOs interested in reading others' papers are encouraged to contact the author or appropriate RETCO".New Version of Paratext RELEASE 5 NOW AVAILABLE

Canon Update" Since Harold Scanlin's 1992 survey of canon research (TT 20), the study of canon has proceeded apace. The act of canonizing and the fact of canons continually raise new questions and persistently resist firm answers to old ones. Far from being a settled topic, canon reaches into many areas, ensuring the vitality and longevity of research and debate--text criticism, orality studies, ideological criticism, apocrypha and LXX studies. The books and articles listed below make up only a fraction of works on canon published since Scanlin's survey, but represent the unflagging pursuit of answers to the enduring questions of canon".Resources for LXX Study"Later this month, UBS translation colleagues will have the opportunity to hear presentations by Adrian Schenker on the Septuagint (LXX) and its use in the text criticism of the Hebrew Bible, especially as it relates to the preparation of the Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ). (Schenker is most recently author of Septante et texte massorétique dans l'histore la plus ancienne du texte de 1 Rois 2-14, Gabalda, 2000.) In anticipation of that event, it seems appropriate to take note of what the past decade has contributed to the rich and rapidly expanding resources for LXX studies".Language Death"At the Triennial Translation Workshop in June, UBS translation consultants heard two papers on the subject of language death-Annie del Corro's "Language Endangerment and Bible Translation," and Joseph Hong's "The Dying of Languages and Bible Translation: Some Reflections." (The papers will be published in revised form in the April issue of The Bible Translator.) As the titles suggest, both papers discuss the implications of language endangerment and death for Bible translation. It is the aim of this brief survey, then, not to explore that important issue, but to provide additional information on the many resources available for learning about language endangerment".Nancy Heisey The Apostle Paul in His World and Ours
