Rick's "Get Over It" Page

Life's pretty tough, y'know it? It's tough enough without whining about stuph you can't change, and it's too short to sweat every bump in the road. Here's my "don't sweat it" list. These are things that seem to really get people down, even though they're not life-threatening.

  1. Whatever you do for business or pleasure, someone's better than you at doing that. Additionally, someone who's not as good as you are is going to be better known for doing your thing. Someone who doesn't sing, dance, write, etc. as well as you do may even become world famous and you may remain obscure.
  2. Regardless of how strong, skilled, trained, and talented you are, you're going be physically injured or sick some day, and it's going to take time out of your routine to recover.
  3. Whatever your religious beliefs, political affiliation, personal philosophy, and ethical stances are, most people in the world disagree with you. You may express a majority belief in some things, but as a composite you're a minority and you'll be very, very hard pressed to find anyone who'll agree with you on everything you believe.
  4. There are people in the world who are better looking than you are, and no home improvement will make you better looking than they are. Additionally, your hatred and petty attacks directed at those people will not only not change their physical beauty but it may turn people against you.
  5. Someday, someone you love, respect, and trust is going to betray, disappoint, or hurt you, and you're just going to have to live with that.
  6. Someday, you're going to do something, whether it's malicious, accidental, or careless, and you're going to have to pay for it.
  7. Someday, you're going to say something to someone in confidence and your secret is going to be revealed. Likewise, you're going to do something you think is private, but it's going to be seen and reported by someone. In a world of 5.5 billion people, the world is full of hungry eyes and ears connected directly to wagging tongues.
  8. Someday, someone less capable that you is going to get the job, lover, or friend you wanted. He's going to succeed for all the wrong reasons, and there's nothing you can do about it. Any complaining you may do, right though it may be, will not only be to no avail but it may actually be counter-productive.
  9. Someday, you're going to get blamed for something you didn't do, and you're going to have to defend yourself for a crime you didn't commit.
  10. The risk of an undeserved personal attack against you (verbal or physical) is high, and you need to be able to stick up for yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally. In all probablility, someday someone will do something to you and you'll have no defense against it. In this case, you'll lose some money, property, maybe a friend, and possibly some self image.
  11. Your beloved may fall in love with some one else, dream about that person while she makes love to you, and speak of that person with extreme fondness, and no effort on your part will win back his place in her heart unless her affection for the other person dies on its own. It may never die.
  12. You're limited by nature, and your abilities (however great) are highly constrained.
  13. Your anger, jealousy, prejudice, and hatred are natural human expression that have evolved with us, and you're going to need to learn to fight nature to win any battles against them. Good luck - 5 billion years of biological evolution is a pretty steep climb.
  14. Goodness and kindness are often unrewarded, and sometimes your only fan is going to be yourself regardless of how magnaminious your gesture was.

Bummer, ain't it? Not really, if your prospective is positive. My advise: learn to be your own best friend, and surround yourself with other good friends. Live every hour like it's a party. Smile. Find your talents and build some hobbies. Indulge yourself. Remember that life's too short to worry sweat precious body fluids away for nothing.

Think about this, friend: if you've been disappointed, burned, wounded, etc. it means you're doing something, right? I think it's pretty easy to keep from being hurt; all you need to do is not do anything and you'll always be safe. Once bitten, console yourself as I do - remind yourself that you got hurt because you were in the game. Heal, get over it, and start playin' again. It's your best defense against a life of watching Gilligan's Island reruns.
