Rick's Core Philosophies

At 40, I think a person should really have his stuph together. Pretty much, anyway. One should have a few basic principles by which one lives his life. These are mine. Fingers out of your noses, cadets! This is almost serious.

  1. If you're stuck in a hole, stop diggin'.
  2. Never miss a good opportunity to shut up.
  3. Don't reflect too long on the fact that the person you need today is the person you pissed off yesterday. It doesn't help to realize that things might've been different.
  4. Life gives the tests first, then teaches the lessons.
  5. Whether or not you believe you can do something, you're probably right.
  6. Don't be surprised when you bite off more than you can chew. Your mouth's probably a lot bigger than you realize.
  7. If you throw your weight around a lot, don't be surprised if someone else throws it around for you.
  8. Sincerely take an interest in other people's lives. The payoff will almost always be to your benefit.
  9. When seeking an answer to any problem, never search for beauty. If your answer isn't beautiful, however, there's probably a better answer. Remember, too, that for every problem there are no shortage of answers that are simple, straight-forward, and completely wrong.
  10. Regardless of what kind of relationship you have with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone.
  11. Brevity is the greatest charm of eloquence.
  12. One good, solid, sincere, primal scream - 10-15 seconds in duration - really takes the edge off, and often makes problem solving a little easier. Simply put: go ahead and get pissed off, but then get to work.
  13. Delay is the most dangerous form of denial. Do it NOW.
  14. Never ask for or give a practical gift.
  15. Always chase after ice cream trucks. You need the exercise. Always treat when you get there. You don't need the money.
  16. Never work through lunch.
  17. If you spend too much time pondering your core philosophies, you're probably missing a lot of living.
