When my mother packed up her essentials and moved to Seattle, Washington a few years ago, she got rid of a great many things. Like most self-respecting pack rats, of course, she kept a great many things as well. Not able to take it all, nor wanting to, she left a lot of her stuff in the care of one of her sisters. Certain things, however, she left with me because she knew that if I knew how important they were to her, I would take good care of them. In all, I guess she left six or seven boxes with me. These things, I've carried with me, and moved several times over the past three years. When she first brought the things over to my house, we went through some of it. I remember coming across a set of iron skillets. She encouraged me to use them but asked that they remain inside the family. I've never used them. The most important box, I knew, was a small gray banker's box containing all of Mother's photographs. Mother graduated from the University of Washington and returned to Texas this year (1998). The things that she had left with her sister were destroyed by her sister's new husband's ex-wife, who didn't know that the things were my mother's and probably wouldn't have cared anyway. So, of all the stuff that she left behind, only the stuff I have remains. Thank goodness I had the pictures! Anyway, for Christmas this last year, I put together a photo album for my mother. I scanned several of my favorites of me and my sister to have preserved in ones and zeros for posterity. That's why all the baby pics of me and my sister. |
