The UDC Thing

Uncle Don Casserole is a much anticipated camp meal. Everything except the secret ingredient to Pepsi must be in UDC. If a die hard camp person goes to Ol’ Baldy for lunch one day and finds out that while they were gone the rest of camp had UDC, they will seriously freak. I guarantee it.

I had an interesting conversation at dinner with two campers during this summer’s Elementary 2 camp. It could possibly be the funniest conversation I’ve had in my entire life. It went something like this:

ME: Here you go, guys. UDC!

1st CAMPER: What’s UDC?

ME: Uncle Don Casserole. It’s really awesome.

2nd CAMPER: You have an uncle named Don?

ME: No, he’s not my uncle.

2nd CAMPER: Whose uncle is he?

ME: I don’t know that he’s anyone’s uncle really. Maybe he is. He’s just called Uncle Don because he’s like the whole camp’s uncle.

1st CAMPER: He must have lots of brothers and sisters.

ME: No, I didn’t mean it literally. It’s just that he’s always here and one of the most dedicated people to Michigamme so we call him UD or Uncle Don instead of just Don. My dad was a camp uncle, too.

2nd CAMPER: Your dad’s your uncle?

ME: No! He’s a camp uncle like Don.

1st CAMPER: Is that Don guy one of those Larsen people?

ME: No, he just used to be here all the time.

2nd CAMPER: Where’s he now? Did he die?

ME: No, he’s coming next week.

1st CAMPER: How come he’s got food named after him?

ME: He’s a really cool guy and has a huge camp history.

2nd CAMPER: Why don’t you got any food named after you?

1st CAMPER: Yeah, aren’t you cool?

2nd CAMPER: (to the other camper) I don’t think so if there’s no food named after her.

1st CAMPER: Hey, where’s the aunt?

ME: What aunt?

1st CAMPER: The camp aunt. Who’s the camp aunt?

ME: I don’t think there is a camp aunt.

2nd CAMPER: Why not?

ME: I don’t know.

2nd CAMPER: You should know. You’re a counselor.
