If you're not a Star Trek fan, might as well leave now and save yourself the time. Because I'm writing about Star Trek Enterprise, the latest reincarnation of Gene Roddenbury's legacy. The idea behind the show is to have sort of a prequel to the original Star Trek series. It will capture the moment when humans first really venture out of their solar system. Lots of swashbuckling frontier type stuff. Presumably we'll see how things are shaped, the formation of the Federation perhaps, maybe something about the beginnings of the Prime Directive.

So far, I like the show. Or at least, I dislike it less than Star Trek Voyager. It has a totally different feel than any other Star Trek. It's more reminiscent of the original Star Trek than anything else. The original Star Trek was like a cult hit. The Next Generation was a popular hit. This thing is nothing like TNG. That makes me wonder just how well this new series is going to do. Time will tell I suppose.

For hard core Star Trek fans, this will be excellent. As I mentioned before, we'll get to see, hopefully, how the universe of the original series, TNG, DS9 and Voyager were shaped. That has a lot of promise, and the writers can do quite a lot with that I think. So far, it's also not much of a thinker. TNG, as most of you are aware was a very intellectual show. So far, Enterprise is not. More action than anything else.

The question remains whether people will embrace it or not. Berman and the other dude (Braga?) took a big gamble with this I think. It might work out, it might not. I find it likely though, that a lot of the people who watched TNG, and became fans Trek through that show, may not like this show as much. Can Enterprise draw a new audience? One thing, probably the biggest thing that i have a problem with, is the music. No inspirational brass fanfare, bold and majestic as a montage of planets and stars sweep through the screen. Instead, there's this crappy little pop thing. Not a good sign.

Enterprise... poo poo.... i don't like it. It takes a very different approach in it's portrayal of mankind. Mankind is viewed as the "underdog", and the Vulcans are seen as people who are trying to keep em down. I disagree with this view. I don't think it would be so bad if this conflict between the Vulcan and Humans was a little more subtle. They don't have to aggressively pursue that point and keep on hitting the audience over the head with "Human-Emotional Archer doesn't understand Emotion-Repressing T'Pol the Vulcan"

Not to mention that the whole T'Pol concept is a blatant rip off of Seven Of Nine. She's got emotions, but she keeps them just under the surface. Nuh uh.... I don't think so... and the gratutious "sexy" scene in the decontamination chamber was contrived at best.

All in all, there was potential in the concept, but I think that the characters are very two dimensional and don't show much capacity for growth or development.

I hope that they do make some changes to the direction that the show is shaping up to be. There's still a chance for it to redeem itself. Right now it's just a run of the mill action show now. I would recommend "Andromeda" over "Enterprise" at this point in time.

"And that's alls I know" - For the Murphy Brown fans.

Is this view so very different from the view that mankind has of themselves currently? People love to be the underdog, it makes them feel extra good when they come out on top. How can you disagree with the view that humans are trying to come out from under the thumb of the Vulcans? It's uniquely American. Next Generation was very cosmopolitan, Deep Space Nine was very European and Voyager was sort of nothing. With Enterprise, you come back to something that actually has a central premise.

The very 'human' captain and the senior crew member struggling to find his or her humanity has been a theme of Star Trek since the very beginning. Spock, Data, Seven.....it's an integral part of the show. It's a vehicle for them to reveal more about humanity than they could if they did not have such a character.

It is very difficult to give the characters more substance this early in the show. We're still getting to know them. Everybody has dominant characteristics. If we saw the hidden layers underneath, already, at this early point, it would get very confusing very fast. I think that this Star Trek has the potential to be the best since Next Generation.
