First of all, let me tell you how I'm going to vote. I'm going to vote NDP. I'm well aware of the NDP shortcomings. Well aware. In fact, I don't think they deserve to be in office the next time around. They've had a few too many screwups. And even more importantly, they've shown that they care more about political posturing and image than they do about principles, and doing what's right for BC. And they won't. No, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Liberals will have an overwhelming majority in the next government. Now, I'm pretty much a moderate leftist. Somewhere in and around the NDP in political views I guess. At least where the NDP is supposed to be. But the NDP don't deserve it, they just don't. Not after everything that's happened. But I'm worried about the upcoming Liberal dictatorship. What will happen to us?
I predict that British Columbians will be so disillusioned with the NDP that they will take the Liberals as a godsend. And they will accept whatever Campbell does without question. The feeling of relief from years of NDP ineptitude will sweep across the province, and Gordon Campbell will surf this wave, and milk it for all it's worth. He'll pretty much have a free hand in government. Who's going to oppose him? The NDP are so vilified throughout the province that I'll be surprised to see them get more than a handful of seats. So who? The Reform? Is that what they're called nowadays? Are they still led by Vander Zalm? I don't seem to have kept up with the right side of the provincial spectrum. Of course, the Liberals are pretty much the right side anyways, effectively taking away any Reform voters.
So, once we give Gordon Campbell a clear mandate to flex his muscles, what can we expect? Something on the order of Klein probably eh? That's what scares me. You see, our democratic system is based on checks and balances, right? Keeps those politicians honest. Who's going to keep the Liberals honest if there's no checks or balances? They can do whatever the hell they want! Although, now that I think of it, does this check and balance thing really work? Where were the Liberals when the NDP were pushing this fast-cat ferry thing through? How come they didn't raise a big public outrage about it? Maybe they did and I missed it.
Anyways, as you can see, I have grave concerns about the future. Which is why I'm voting for NDP even though I don't think they deserve to be voted for. But the alternative is even worse.
