I've been singing in choirs, performing in bands and stuff like that for a few years now. I've noticed that there's basically two kinds of people in music. Those who crave the limelight and those who shun it.

I'm a shunner! Before I go on I'd just like to point out that there's a third category, those who don't want to be there in the first place. But basically by the later years of high school, those people have all bit the dust. The remaining people can be divided into two categories. As I said before. Why am I repeating myself?

Those who crave the limelight are totally geared towards performance. They tolerate rehearsals. They perform well in them. They make suggestions, contribute, etc. But where they sparkle is in a performance. They have a give and take with the audience, that is impossible for the other category to really understand. They kick it up an extra notch in a performance. It's really a treat to watch. Great stage presence is a trait of such people. They command the stage. They command the audience. Captivating. These people are showstoppers often. Divas. You think of Ella, Whitney, Britney.

The shunners are a different story. Shunners is too strong of a word. But these people do music because they love the music. They'd be just as happy spending all their time just playing or singing for themselves, and their fellow musicians, rather than for an audience. These are the people who get really keyed up in a performance. They tend to perform better in rehearsal than on the show. But when they do perform well on stage, they are the type who share with the audience. They don't show the audience something, they share something with the audience. These are typically the kind of people who play in little jazz clubs, stuff like that.

Sometimes you get people who have a foot in both worlds. These are the truly great ones, I feel. They command an audience, and yet appear vulnerable. They......just unexplainable I guess. Blossom Dearie. Charlie Parker.

There wasn't really much of a point to the article today. I just like categorizing people, and this is just another way to do it.
