Boy, if I waited much longer before making another entry, I'd be kicked off Emily's website!

I want to talk about Great Big Sea for a moment. Some of you might be fans already. They had a concert on CBC a couple of weeks ago. I sort of knew of them before, had heard a couple of songs, and really liked one in particular, End of the World, a cover of the original REM version. But I watched this concert and I loved it, every number! They've got a mix of a folksy Irish/Newfie/Stan Rogers thing going on. Except that they mix some pop into it. The result? One catchy tune after another.

My favourites at the moment are General Taylor and Mari-mac. Both feature the tenor guy (I'm not sure how they arrange their voice parts and stuff, but most of the singing is done by this long hair guy, with another guy harmonizing above his line. The other two guys usually join in at the chorus. General Taylor and Mari-mac both feature the guy who usually harmonizes above.) Mari-mac goes so fast that the guy's gotta be on something....maybe pure adrenaline. And General Taylor is classic folk music but a lot more energy-infused than classic folk singers. Their live performances are better than the ones off the cd. Anyways......check them out, if you're not already a fan.

Alas, they're not for everybody. I happen to love them because I would love to be them. That's exactly the kind of music that I'd like to sing. Others, who strive to be like Jewel, or Eminem, or Swollen Members, or Luciano Pavarotti, etc. may not be as thrilled.
