The Great White Bird

The great white bird
wails her mating call
across the snow-capped mountains
Echoing deep into the evergreens below
Resting silently to the ground
She searches peak to peak
As she soars within the clouds
Graceful wings tilt
to dip with the winds
to glide her across a sky of blue
Below the clouds so white
They conceal her beauty
Bound in soft white downy feathers
Her pink flesh covered in angel white
She was born in a time
when great birds soared
the earth in plenty
Few are left now
to remember the peace and beauty
Great valleys covered in green
Waters so blue and clean
A time of great joy
for those on foot and wings
Time passes as it must
The great birds perish
as all things must
But she grew on
while her numbers dwindled
Until she alone was left
Until her calls
to mate were left unanswered
She grows weary but lives on
Unseen by human eyes unless joined in love
She glides across
yet more golden skies
Her kindled spirit never dies
Unique is she if to be gazed upon
A shadow of a human
with wings tucked tightly against her
Like the unicorn of her time past
And not an oddity as she is now
Her pretty pink toes
are just like the creatures below
Her eyes deep blue
as sterile snow
Her golden mane
is streaked with silver and gold
Her delicate fingers
reach beyond her wings
she is a beauty to dazzle any eyes
But in this age
she is but a fantasy
The great white bird
wails her mating call
Hoping he will answer
her moanful plea
Alone,
alas,
her heart grows heavy
Her wings grow weary
by endless flight
Gently she glides
to the looming earth below
Resting her pink toes
upon the grasses
Oh the blades of grass
so warm between her toes
A lost, but yet
familiar memory of times past
When she walked among others
of her kind
Weary she lays to rest her head
Not long now
and she would be dead
She kept the watch
as taught when young
To protect caring hearts
of those below
To bring love
and laughter
with dusting winds
Upon their bodies
lying in grasses below
Now she grows weary
with no mate
to brighten her days
The great white bird wails
her last mating call
And gently closes her eyes
for one last time
Her soft white downy feathers
scatter into the winds
As she
settles gently back
into the sun warmed ground
Her peace,
at last,
into paradise she glides
Her mating call
is unanswered all around
The great white bird
soars once again
into the skies
But unbelievers
will never see her
until two hearts are tied
And her mating call
is answered once more.
